Can Kombucha help with weight management?

Can Kombucha help with weight management?

The short answer is Yes!

I'd like to share how Kombucha helps me personally and also what science has observed. I've been drinking and brewing Kombucha for over 10 years and I can testify that it has helped me manage my weight.

  1. It helps me get back on track when I have a werewolf junk food snicky snack attack.
  2. It helps me burn more calories. I like to drink kombucha after physical exercise as a recovery drink. It boosts a body's metabolic rate.
  3. It helps me enjoy the foods that work against my weight management, like carbohydrates and cheese! I married an Italian man and let me tell you, he is a good cook and we know how to do yummy carbs in this household. Kombucha can stabilize carbohydrate metabolism causing a steady stream of glucose into the bloodstream. I drink kombucha in the late afternoon to help control cravings and also before a high-carb meal to help with digestion.
  4. It's a healthy beverage alternative. Kombucha is low in calories compared to high-sugar sodas or juices making it a healthy choice to quench my thirst. The general recommended amount is 4 oz. I personally drink approximately 12 oz a day but, I won't recommend more than 16 oz a day.

How Kombucha Tea can help:

Green tea has been shown to reduce obesity and belly fat when combined with exercise. I use a mixture of green and black tea in our Kombucha.

Green tea catechin consumption enhances exercise-induced abdominal fat loss in overweight and obese adults - PubMed (nih.gov)

Many people experience health benefits from Kombucha and feel better overall when they drink it regularly. We need more scientific studies on humans and the benefits of Kombucha. There are in vivo experiments that back up the health benefits of Kombucha.

I don't like animal testing; I never have. However, I can't ignore the information it provides either.

This study shows that Kombucha limited weight gain in mice and they lived longer.

"This pilot study using mice offers some qualified support for the claimed benefits of weight reduction, longer life, and increased environmental awareness or responsiveness, as seen in open-field behaviors."

"Kombucha-drinking mice of both sexes did not gain as much weight as did untreated controls of the same sex, even though the 15% kombucha solution contained additional glucose (250–500 mcg/dl). "

"Regardless of sex, kombucha-drinking mice lived significantly longer than untreated controls, with the greatest variability shown in the kombucha-drinking males. Considering that the average lifespan for the C57/BL-6 mouse is approximately 2 y, the observed effect on longevity represents about a 5% longer life for the males and a 2% longer life for the females. This would tend to support the claims1,2,7 that drinking the tea-beverage kombucha from the so-called “mushroom of long life” contributes to longer life."

Wow! Kombucha could trigger similar benefits to fasting and reduce fat stores. I love that!

Kombucha Tea-associated microbes remodel host metabolic pathways to suppress lipid accumulation | PLOS Genetics

Emphasis mine:

"Using the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans as an animal model system to study the host physiological response to KTMs, we show that Kombucha Tea-associated probiotic microorganisms (KTMs) colonize the C. elegans intestine and impart widespread changes in the expression of evolutionarily conserved lipid metabolism genes, resulting in reduced fat levels in the host. The host metabolic response to actively fermenting KTMs requires an increase in proteins that break down lipids paired with a reduction in a protein that builds triglycerides, which mirrors the events that occur during fasting. These findings are consistent with the reported human health benefits of Kombucha Tea and provide new insights into the host response to Kombucha-associated microbes, which could inform the use of Kombucha in complementary health care approaches in the future."

An article from Epoch Health explains, "These probiotic microbes altered the expression of genes involved in fat metabolism, leading to an increase in proteins responsible for fat breakdown and a decrease in those involved in synthesizing triglycerides, the body’s most common types of fat. This metabolic shift resulted in reduced fat accumulation in the worms, according to the researchers."

Wow! Right, the researchers are confirming what my body was already telling me. It's nice to have a better understanding of how this is happening.

Drinking Kombucha is not the only thing I do to manage my weight; exercise, a good diet and plenty of water are also things I focus on but Kombucha is a tool I steadily rely on to help me with my goals.

Remember, at Blanco Booch, we use only Natural Spring Water from a protected source and organic raw cane sugar in our Kombucha.
