Eldon sighed when Mercury gave him a goodbye kiss. He played with the collar of Mercury’s shirt in an attempt to buy him some time, trying to come up with some way to get in on the next part of the murder case. He’d like to see it through. Given how he’d punched the victim less than forty-eight hours ago, he had a vested interest in getting the killer caught. “Am I not allowed to go because I’m a vampire. Or is it because I’m a suspect.” He met Mercury’s gaze. “I can stay in the truck.”
“None of the above and no. We’ll be a while. We have to deliver the death notice and then interview them. You’d be stuck in the truck for too long. It’s more comfortable here. And your presence may stir the pot a little more than I would like.”
“Because they think I did it.” Eldon rolled his eyes. “They’re not that smart if they think that.”
Mercury smiled. “Why do you say that?”
“Do you think I did it?” Answering a question with a question was suspect but Eldon couldn’t take it if Mercury thought he was capable of murder.
Mercury held him by his nape, pulling him closer. “Look at me.” Eldon’s gaze snapped to his. “What happened to him wasn’t self-defense. And I’m your alibi, baby.”
“No one brings a bat to a lake with good intentions.”
“Exactly.”
“And who the hell carries something like that around in their car?”
Mercury raised his eyebrows. “How do you know perpetrator was in a car? Maybe they walked.”
Eldon pulled away, shaking his head. “No one noticed some dude walking along the road with a bat? Even in the middle of the night, if that’s when it happened. You’d think someone would see him. Some night owl person watching late night television looking out the window or something. Makes more sense if he was in a car.”
Mercury’s smiled widened. “And you’re assuming it’s a male who killed him?”
“No. This is Wingspan. Land of the dragon shifters. Your kind has hella strength. Could be anyone.” Eldon shrugged. “Not sure why I said he other than more men victimize women, so a lot of the time its a male. Pretty sure that’s a statistic. I’ll google it after you leave me here because I’m of no use to you anymore.” Eldon gave his best puppy dog look.
Gretchen snorted out a laugh but otherwise didn’t say anything.
Mercury kissed him again. “You want me to use you, baby?”
He did when Mercury made it about sex and there was no mistaking it. Every word dipped in it. “You make it sound dirty.”
Mercury leaned in, his lips caressing the shell of Eldon’s ear. “I’ll make it as dirty as you want.”
The room heated and all of Eldon’s blood when to his cock. “You can’t say shit like that right before you leave.”
Mercury chuckled. “Do you want to go back to the house?”
“No. I want to help.” He wanted Curtis’s killer brought to justice. It shouldn’t be important to him considering Curtis had been nothing about a grade A asshole but there was a murderer in Wingspan, or potentially at least. That seemed like a big fucking problem. Maybe he couldn’t do much, but he wouldn’t know how useful he could be if he went back to Mercury’s house. Staying at the police station gave him a little leverage, although he didn’t know how yet.
