Saturday 24th May, 7.30pm Bedford Corn Exchange
You're invited!
Word is already out that there is an exceptional concert coming in just a couple of weeks!
Bedfordshire Symphony Orchestra
Saturday 24th May
7.30pm
Bedford Corn Exchange
Guest conductor: Bjorn Bantock
Soloist: Jakob Kullberg
We have a special opening piece for you and I'm going to leave it to you to discover more about it in our podcast episode below. It is linked to our Guest Conductor, Bjorn Bantock. So tune in to hear more!
With Tchaikovsky's sixth symphony, his "pathétique", on the programme, you are guaranteed an emotional orchestral performance. It's tempting to translate Pathétique into pathetic! However, it's meaning is much closer to "passion" or "emotion". It's certainly a surprising symphony in many ways with a major twist in its tail, with maybe more questions than answers.
Tchaikovsky was apparently pleased with his composition and wrote to his brother: “I am now wholly occupied with the new work … and it is hard for me to tear myself away from it. I believe it comes into being as the best of my works.”
Whilst it seems to have been an accidental epitaph, as Tchaikovsky famously died 6 days after the premier, it is largely regarded as one of his best works and not only by later critics: “I certainly regard it as easily the best—and especially the most ‘sincere’—of all my works,” Tchaikovsky wrote to his nephew Vladimir ‘Bob’ Davydov, “and I love it as I have never before loved one of my musical offspring.” What an amazing opportunity it is for us to bring this piece of music to life in the Corn Exchange.
With Jakob Kullberg on the cello, we also welcome an internationally renowned cellist to Bedford for this concert. Jakob is extraordinarily talented and is teaching at the Royal College of Music as well as pursuing his international solo and teaching career. He's going to play the Shostakovich Cello concerto no. 1 - and we know already that cellists are coming from near and far to hear him!
