BOS newsletter 25th Nov 2025

Dear All

Congratulations to Sinfonia and Ian Smith on their fabulous concert with Bedford Choral Society last Saturday!

For BSO: I hope you’ve had a good week off and that you’re feeling rested, relaxed and ready to recommence on Wednesday! Your committee has been working hard on your behalf and has some wonderful plans in place for the future. These will be shared very soon.

In the meantime, Julia Lence has decided to stand down from her position as secretary. We thank Julia for all her work while she has held the role.

We will need someone to replace Julia so please let me (or Julia or any of the committee members) know if you would like to take on the role. If we don’t have willing volunteers, we will have to start persuading people, which (as I know from recent experience!) is a less enjoyable way of finding committee members.

I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday and fighting my way through the host of potential new secretaries who will no doubt greet me at the front door, desperate to be the first to offer their services…

Karen Mason

Chair

Message from Ian:

Thank you to all the players who played in the concert on Saturday to support the Bedford Choral Society. At time of writing this, the concert has yet to take place, but I am sure the orchestral playing will be superb!!

Just a reminder that if you wish to see music in advance for the January concert then please contact Benjamin Phillips. He will have all the music by 1 December.

Many thanks

Ian

Continuum Concert

Professional chamber choir, CONTINUUM, returns to St Paul’s Church for our fourth seasonal concert; blending familiar Christmas classics with festive harmonies from across the centuries.

CONTINUUM’s Artistic Director, Harry Guthrie, grew up in Bedford before studying Music at Trinity College, Cambridge. Under his direction, the choir brings together outstanding young professional singers, most of whom are former Cambridge choral scholars.

The programme includes favourites such as In dulci jubilo, Gaudete, and The Oxen, alongside works by Benjamin Britten (A Hymn to the Virgin), Herbert Howells (A Spotless Rose), Ralph Vaughan Williams (The Truth from Above), and Elizabeth Poston (Jesus Christ the Apple Tree).

To give a flavour of our performance, here is a short video of CONTINUUM singing Silent Night.  We hope it offers a moment of calm and beauty amid the seasonal rush.
