If you want to gain mastery over a thing, the best place to start is to take control over the "bookends".
Want to master intubation? Start by mastering the equipment set-up and the securing of the tube. What happens between those bookends has a thousand different variations. But the beginning and the end can almost always be the same and will improve your sense of mastery over the skill.
If you want to gain control over improving the average quality of your days, start by mastering the morning and the evening routines. The stuff of life between those "bookends" has an infinite variety, but your sense of mastery of life will increase dramatically as you gain control over how you start and finish your days.
One situation that feels almost overwhelmingly out of control is the healthcare transmission of COVID-19.
My most recent blog post is inspired by this concept of "bookends" and the work of Atul Gawande, the man who is most responsible for the propagation of such things as hand-washing in hospitals and RSI checklists.
In The Checklist Manifesto Atul writes about the power of simple checklists to reduce both medical error and catastrophe in the aviation industry.
With this in mind, I've written some checklists you might find useful for starting and ending your shifts in a way that will help reduce the risk of you becoming a victim of healthcare transmission of COVID-19.
You can read about them on the blog which also features a printable PDF you might like to have taped to your locker.
Please consider sharing this post with your peers to help keep as many of us, and our families, as safe as possible during these challenging times.
