See "dreamside" imagined by this artist

I've been meaning to share this with you: Gorgeous artwork from artist Alta Riff that's an eye-catching take on Peter Blackwell and Beatrix Harper from the Clandestine Magic books.

Those colors! And look: dreamside, there in the corner ...

Every interpretation of fictional characters is just that β€” an interpretation. Our own mental picture might be very different, and it's frankly awesome to think about a lot of different versions of Beatrix and Peter out there, in your heads.

There's another version of them in drawing form here, along with photos standing in for other characters in the series. Lydia, Rosemarie, Ella and a bunch more. (Thank you, Library of Congress, for a fun few days of spelunking through old photography.)

I picked those photos out after the books were written, and none of them are exactly how I'd imagined these characters. But each one spoke to me. The determined glint in a gaze. The twist of lips that can't quite be called a smile. Many of the actual people in the photos fought for their rights, and it shows.

If you've built up a mental image of any of these characters, let me know where these match up or fall short. Part of the reason I don't give a lot of description of them in the books is to leave room for your imagination.

Well: That, and to get to the banter quicker.

Given a choice, I will always pick banter.

If you've come across cool art of characters from other books (fantasy especially), do share. πŸ‘€

P.S. Thank you to everyone who grabbed the new box set of the trilogy! If you've been meaning to read it (or listen to the audiobook), you can find it here.

A few more cool & bookish things

Deal alert on this new book: The Secret Witch of Kriegspiel is 99 cents for just a few days. Great time to nab it.

It's set in S.L. Prater's cool gaslamp fantasy world, where witches and priests both use magic, but society considers the former dodgy and the latter respectable. In one part of the country, witches are often married off to priests whether they like it or not.

Secret Witch starts off with an "or not" marriage, and the mystery is: Why did these people who seemed to be unintentionally falling for each other through hilarious letters end up like this? Can they find their way to something better?

Contents include steam and a wild side character named after someone you know. (S.L. Prater has been dropping fantasy-romance-author names in all these books. πŸ˜‰)

Give me that book

Looking for more fantasy-with-romance books you can read free in Kindle Unlimited? This has a clumsy spellcaster trying to prove to an irresistible detective that she didn't murder someone, a handsome royal guard with questionable motives, and a bunch of other stories that fit the bill.

And free-for-everyone books: A well-dressed demon puts a new spin on the idea of a (wedding) date from hell, a somewhat unreliable genie embarks on a series of hilarious misadventures, and lots more.
