I like finding little bookish bonuses.
You know: Like realizing the full meaning, on page 399, of something a character said on page 40.
Or recognizing a reference to a poem or a play or pop culture, something in passing that wasn't lit up in lights saying HELLO I AM A REFERENCE.
When I ended up writing a character with a very fairy tale view of the world β not in a rose-colored glasses sense, more Here Be Dragons β I put in a few fairy tale references. Then more. And even more, most of them in an unassuming, not-at-all-lit-up way that would be easy to miss if you weren't on the lookout.
That was the point it occurred to me that it would be fun to see how many of the fairy tales people could find.
And the Into the Bargain fairy tale quest was born.
Once Into the Bargain launches on Jan. 31 (next week!), you've got a month to read the novella and enter the quest to put yourself in the running for a cool physical prize and some fun digital ones.
As you'll see from the rules, you can enter for a chance at the physical prize without getting the book.
But the fun is in the finding, I think.
Just in case you're wondering: The references aren't the point of the story. The story is the point of the story. But early readers who enjoyed the novella also had fun with the game.
"I loved the fairytale quest," Tempest Reign wrote in her Bookstagram review.
Are you as much a fairy tale expert as you think you are? Test your skills.
I can't wait to see how many everyone finds.
By the way: The book's 99 cents now, but the price will go up soon after launch. Snaffle wisely.
