I used to think that "trope" was the same as "overused device in storytelling," but I'm older and a little wiser now. Any sort of setup for a story can be brand-new again. It's all in the telling.
And if you're anything like me, you've noticed that certain types of setups will always pique your interest.
Main characters on opposite sides of some divide, for instance. Clashing values, vying for the same prize, power struggles, verbal fencing. Oh yes, enemies to lovers is reliable catnip for me because I love banter and all the character growth that comes with having to reevaluate strongly held views.

Don't get me wrong, I like all sorts of stories and types of characters. But catnip is catnip. We all know what makes us get that "shut up and take my money" feeling.
It's really interesting to know why, exactly, isn't it?
