I live in western Oregon now and call the greener part of the Pacific Northwest my home. I've visited a vast majority of the more accessible places that nature wizard Ina protects in my Magic of Nasci fantasy series. Not only do I want to accurately draw readers into her world of mythical creatures and elemental magic, I also love visiting these stunning wilderness locations.
I never get tired of these views. Knoll Loop, north of Lincoln City.
But before I moved here, I grew up in southern Idaho. No, not that pretty forested Idaho you might have seen in a Hollywood movie or two, but the semi-arid part of the state. My grandparents literally lived at the edge of the desert, where a step past their garden was sagebrush and rattlesnakes stretching out to the horizon.
And what wonderful vegetables and flowers they grew too.
The release of my latest book, Gathering Swarm, calls back to my semi-arid desert roots. Wuaro, the desert shepherd with a flair for water magic, plays a huge role in the latest vaettur adventure. Perhaps it's fitting, then, that I dedicated this latest book to my grandfather, a Japanese American farmer who spent his entire life coaxing plants out of land that receives very little annual rainfall.
Check out the book's opening lines:
“‘COME HELP ME banish this vaettur,’ you said.” I sidestepped an incoming bloom of fetid air, drawing a sigil for a wind tunnel to blow it away from me. One breath of that crud, and I’d choke to death. “‘It’ll be like old times,’ you said.”
Guntram, master of air that he was, could rely on his superior wind shield for the smaller strikes. Air zipped around him in tight circles, his tattered cloak and black beard appearing blurry even though I only stood on the other side of the meadow. The green cloud dissipated before it could reach him.
“Less talk, Ina. More sigils.” He whipped out an earth crevice sigil so fast, I barely saw his fingers move. The ground below our enemy caved. He did this while simultaneously maintaining at least two other air sigils. The lumberjack-looking augur didn’t even appear tired.
Show-off.
