Authors are told to write what they know, which is why both of my book series take place in areas I lived before. Legends of Llenwald happens in Salt Lake City, just a few hours from where I grew up in southern Idaho, and the Magic of Nasci is centered on the wilderness areas mostly around Eugene, Oregon, my current home base.
I've received a decent amount of fan mail from current and former Oregonians who have found memories of the Oregon Coast. When I write about a specific city or state park, they say they have no problem picturing the story in their minds. This makes perfect sense to me because, my novels notwithstanding, those untamed wildernesses have a kind of magic all their own.
One of the most spectular areas on the Oregon Coast is Cape Perpetua, where the climax to Chasing Lightning takes place. When people ask where I should go on the coast, that is my number one spot. Not only does it have both easy hiking trails, breathtaking ocean views, and a ranger's station, you can visit one of my favorite spots in the entire world: Thor's Well. I've posted a bunch of pictures of this waterspout before, but you really need to see it in motion to appreciate its full glory.

A bit of warning: please do not get as close to Thor's Well as the people in this video! The Oregon Coast claims the lives of people who don't take necessary precautions around it every year. One huge wave could easily people into the depths of the collapsed sea cavern under Thor's Well. I recommend staying in the tidepools closer to the pathways if you visit the area.
Have you ever been to the Oregon Coast? Know a magical natural area near your home? Tell me about it at [email protected].
