Ina from my Magic of Nasci fantasy series is not half-Japanese by chance, but because I'm half-Japanese myself. They say to write about what you know, so I went all in. My siblings and I are pretty far removed from our Asian roots because it was our grandparents' parents who came to the United States during the previous turn of the century, the 1900s. My mom's side of the family looks Japanese, but they act like the southern Idahoans that they are. I've always been inspired by my heritage, though, which is why I lived in Japan for a couple of years after graduating college to teach English.
Okay, I also went because I'm a super huge nerd. Yes, there is a little Japanese man inside this Taiko drum mascot suit.
One thing I love about Japanese culture is their rich folk tales. Kitsune (or foxes) in particular are a fun Japanese tradition. Ina's spirit animal is a fox because it ties her to both to her ancestry and her personality. Kitsune are often portrayed as both tricksters (punishing the wicked) and guardians (protecting those they love). They also have some incredible powers, including fox fire and shapeshifting. The Inari foxes are a special spiritual fox said to provide good luck and drive evil spirits away. Does any of this sound like our favorite shepherd of Nasci?
Ema (絵馬) at a fox shrine I visited. You write a prayer or wish on these wooden boards, where the spirits are said to receive them.
I'm absolutely not an expert in all things Japanese, but I do love learning about their cultural stories. Have you ever been to Japan? Got a favorite Japanese myth? Send me a line at [email protected].
Of Serpents and Swords
The Chanter's Blade, a preview copy of a new first book in a fantasy series. While not of Japanese origin, fellow Asian writer AA Lee weaves a beautiful story from Philippine mythology. The moon-eating serpent is coming. Lin-ay, the chief's secluded daughter, awakens a sacred blade to protect her tribe, but she must trust a liar who wants to harm her family in order to complete her quest.
Until next time, happy adventuring!
