The Colour of Light

“You would be so beautiful if only you were a little lighter.”

Aunty Bisi said it casually while sipping her drink.

“Have you heard about those Glutathione drips? Adaeze used them before her wedding. Look at how much she glowed.”

Fatimah smiled politely, but the words stayed with her long after the conversation ended.

She was twenty-eight, preparing for her wedding, and had always loved her dark skin. It was smooth, rich, and even. But now, for the first time, she wondered if it was not enough.

A few days later, she stood in a boutique in Wuse 2, trying on dresses. She looked at herself in the mirror, then opened Instagram.

That was a mistake.

Her feed was filled with women showing off lighter skin, flawless photos, and comments praising their “glow up.” Some of them looked completely different from how they looked a year ago.

Fatimah stared at the screen.

Was this what beauty looked like now?

She closed the app but couldn't stop thinking about it.

A week later, her cousin Zainab invited her to a small gathering in Maitama.

When Fatimah arrived, she noticed something beautiful.

The women there were all different shades of melanin. Some were light brown. Some were golden. Some were deep, dark, and radiant.

Yet every single one of them was beautiful.

As they chatted and laughed, Zainab shared a story.

“My mother used to tell me I was too dark to be pretty,” she said quietly.

“I believed her for years until I realised she was only repeating what someone told her. And that person was probably repeating what someone told them too.”

The group became silent.

Fatimah understood.

For generations, women had been carrying the same lie and passing it on.

That night, she decided she would not carry it anymore.

Two weeks before her wedding, her photographer asked,

“How would you like to look in your photos?”

Fatimah smiled.

“Like myself,” she said. “Exactly like myself.”

And when the photographs arrived, she saw a woman glowing with confidence, joy, and peace.

Not because her skin was lighter.

But because she finally understood it never needed to be.

 Lessons From Fatimah's Story

  1. Confidence grows when you stop measuring yourself against social media trends.
  2. Beauty is not one shade. Melanin comes in many beautiful forms.
  3. Sometimes the beliefs that hurt us are simply old stories that have been passed down for generations.
