Dear Reader,
I was recently a guest on Olly Richards’ I Will Teach You a Language Podcast (episode 405 - How to start a new life abroad as an expat with Mikkel Thorup), and shared my thoughts on:
- How I learn languages
- The best places to become an expat
- The differences between tourist visas, permanent residency, and citizenship
- The easiest countries for getting permanent residency
- One country where you can get permanent residency for $5,000 (including visas for your entire family)
Olly has also been a guest on the Expat Money Show (episode 83: Secrets to Learning a Foreign Language Quickly), and it was fun to switch roles and share more about my international adventures.
For those of you planning to move abroad (or who already live abroad but want to better understand and speak the local language), I highly recommend his excellent story-based courses. Instead of forcing yourself through boring textbooks, the stories help you pick up words and patterns in a fun, effective, and natural way. The stories help you internalize new words and phrases in context, and keep you curious about what happens next in the narrative.
Talk soon,
Mikkel
