“Makes sense”.
That was my reaction when I saw Forbes Paraguay report that Peter Thiel (one of the wealthiest, most prominent figures in Silicon Valley) went to Paraguay to meet with President Santiago Peña.
For those of you who may not follow the tech world closely, Thiel is not just another wealthy investor among thousands.
He co-founded PayPal.
He was one of the earliest major investors in Facebook.
He co-founded Palantir (mixed feelings on this one, by the way), which is one of the most important companies in data analytics, intelligence software, defence technology, and artificial intelligence.
He remains a partner at Founders Fund, one of the most powerful venture capital firms in the world, with investments in companies like SpaceX and Stripe… and many more tech companies you may or may not use every single day, with or without knowing it.
According to Forbes Paraguay, Thiel’s fortune is valued at roughly US$23.4 billion, which places him firmly on the list of the world’s wealthiest people in the world.
So when someone like that shows up in Paraguay and meets with the president, it's not just to “shoot the breeze”.
People at that level do not wander into a small, landlocked country for no good reason.
They go because they recognize the same signals, the trajectory and because a country has moved far enough along the curve that it is no longer invisible to serious capital.
For years, I have been telling people that Paraguay is one of the most interesting Plan-B jurisdictions in the world.
Paraguay has been overlooked, misunderstood, underpriced, and structurally positioned in a way that most people simply did not appreciate.
I have been bullish on Paraguay long before it gained relevance as a serious destination for investors, families and entrepreneurs looking for a better jurisdictional position (among our savvy community, Paraguay has long been one of our go-to jurisdictions for a reason).
We have been helping families position themselves there through real estate investments, land banking opportunities and through securing residency (some of our clients even live there full-time).
We have helped investors understand why land, real estate, tax policy, stability, energy, food independence, and access to the broader South American market make Paraguay far more interesting than most outsiders ever imagined… long before most did.
…and now, the rest of the world is beginning to see it too.
The Forbes Paraguay article framed Thiel’s visit as a signal of international interest in Paraguay’s potential in the new digital economy, especially in industries tied to artificial intelligence and data center infrastructure.
When most people talk about AI, they talk about models, chips, software, data, and the companies at the top of the headlines (think OpenAI, Nvidia, etc.).
But underneath all of that sits something much more basic:
Energy.
Artificial intelligence is not just a tech revolution.
It is also an energy revolution.
Data centres consume enormous amounts of electricity, and as AI workloads grow, the countries and regions that can offer stable, affordable and clean power are going to become much more important than most people can currently fathom.
That is where Paraguay becomes extremely interesting… especially to a well-connected man on the cutting edge of the AI revolution like Thiel.
Paraguay has one of the greatest hydroelectric advantages in the world (thanks to the Itaipu and Yacyretá dams), making it an ultra-low-cost producer and provider of energy.
This is not a small advantage.
It is a strategic and crucial asset that AI companies, governments, and data-centre operators need, and evidently are travelling to find.
When someone so deeply connected to the future of data, intelligence, software, defence technology, venture capital, and artificial intelligence is now paying attention to a country we have been discussing for years, we should be either patting ourselves on the back for being early… or taking decisive action to secure the upside Paraguay offers to families and investors like us.
…before the world catches on, and prices go up, and access gets more difficult, I should add…
Paraguay is no longer just telling the world about being “open for business.”
Paraguay is telling the world it is ready for its seat at the big table… and all signs and signals point to them being welcomed.
…and they’re sitting down at that table with a mighty strong hand…
Paraguay’s global relevance is becoming impossible to ignore… and it’s why so many of you in our community have worked with my team to secure legal residency there or have even joined me on the ground there for an Expat Exploration & Investment Tour.
The opportunity for serious families to secure residency and position themselves economically through hard-asset investments in a country that is increasingly being recognized for the exact advantages we have been discussing for years is now.
If you have been thinking about securing Paraguayan residency, I would not wait around assuming the current pathway will remain available forever.
If you have been thinking about real estate, land banking, or taking an economic position in the country, I would not assume today’s access or entry points will look at all similar to what they look like today.
Peter Thiel’s visit DOES NOT mark the beginning of Paraguay’s rise to global relevance.
…it is just one more (of many) signals that the rise is becoming harder for the rest of the world to ignore.
