Dear Members of the Hurley Community, and Neighborhood Friends of the Hurley School,
We hope that you all are staying healthy during these challenging times. One thing we are all missing is being together, in person. That sense of longing was especially strong last Friday night, when our Hurley community was supposed to be gathered together at TropiCaliente. TropiCaliente, the signature event for the Neighborhood Parents of the Hurley School, is our annual fundraiser, where the majority of our annual budget is raised.
Even though TropiCaliente didn’t happen, we are inspired by, and most appreciative of, the many members of our community who continue to support the school with donations.
To date, we have raised over $21,000. We are so grateful to our sponsors, advertisers, and individuals who have already made a gift. While not close to what we would have brought in with the event, this money will go a long way to supporting the Hurley.
The money will be used both to ensure that all families in our community have their basic human needs met, and that, when school is back in session, NPHS can bridge the gap between Boston Public School budgets, and what Hurley students deserve.
If you have already donated, thank you. If you haven’t, please consider a gift today. Every dollar matters, and will be put to good use.
Our Fund a Need paddle raise was designed to raise funds for these areas. We will also use funds to provide food for Hurley families, resources for distance learning, and other needs as designated by Principal Verano.
$1,000 will provide for our students who need an extra level of support. NPHS funds literacy intervention sessions for students needing guided reading practice in English and Spanish, and provides materials for special education teachers and school therapists.
$500 will help cover the costs of providing materials and technology to ensure our students have what they need to succeed in the classroom.
$250 will build a fund for NPHS to invest in the Hurley schoolyard to promote safety, learning, and healthy play.
$100 helps NPHS fund continuing education for our outstanding teachers.
$50 will help build performing arts programming at the Hurley. Next year, we hope to partner with Handel and Haydn to bring music curriculum to the Hurley. Past programming has included Urbanity dance, Urban Voices music lessons, and performances by Young Audiences of Massachusetts, whose mission, which states that “the arts are an essential component of both formal education and of youth development, and that all students, regardless of backgrounds, talents and abilities, deserve access to the rich educational opportunities inherent to arts learning,” explains why the funds raised tonight are so important.
We know that these are challenging times for everyone, but we ask that you consider a gift to NPHS today.
All the best,
