Hey ,
Wishing those of you who celebrate a Happy Easter Sunday and a restful day to you all. This week the latest edition of the Pilates Journal was released and with it, an article I wrote about chronic pain - both working with clients and living with the condition myself.
As you can imagine, it can be challenging to share a personal story about a subject that you also help others live with. But the real challenge isn't in admitting that you're human with human problems. The challenge lies in understanding that the world of wellness suggests that perfection, accomplishments, and success, rather than resilience, community, and perseverance are the goals of any and all practices. This is especially true for the Pilates world.
When I'm teaching class, I often point out that the challenging exercises we experience present us with an opportunity to know whether or not it's time to get in a "resilience rep," or take a breather. In many ways, the movement provides us with a laboratory in which we can train our brains to understand how best to meet our challenges.
This understanding naturally extends beyond the mat. Just as we learn to navigate challenging movements in Pilates, we also encounter difficulties in our daily lives, particularly when living with or working with chronic pain. It's in these moments that recognizing the need for rest and support becomes crucial.
Working with some of you who started your Feel Good Foundations Coaching this week highlighted the importance of working this process. There's definitely a time to push forward in your life - to pursue your goal and make moves towards the health endeavors you've been talking about forever. There's also times when support is low and you need more of a quick win to remind you that progress is possible - even when things feel bleak. This is the benefit of working with someone who understands the nuances of both movement and well-being - namely, me.
In my Pilates Journal article, Understanding and Moving With Chronic Pain, I delve deeper into this connection between embracing our struggles, finding strength in movement, and recognizing the importance of rest and support.

I hope you find the article thought-provoking and perhaps even a source of encouragement.
