Hey ,
I used to wear my "busy" badge with pride, juggling a million things at once and barely coming up for air. Sound familiar?
In my coaching practice, I see this pattern all the time with high-performing professionals. But here's the catch: While busyness might feel productive, it often comes at the expense of our well-being.
But what does "busy" really mean?
For me, "busy" stands for:
Bypassing
Unwanted
States of
You.
Think about it: When you're caught in a whirlwind of activity, do you easily stop to consider your well-being? Or do you find yourself pushing aside your need for rest, ignore your inner voice, and disconnecting from your true needs?
It's a common experience. And unfortunately, unless you're working with me 😉, it's rare for someone to step in and tell you to take a break – until it might be too late.
But how do we create a life that honors both productivity AND restoration?
It starts with recognizing that rest is just as valuable as productivity. We need time to recharge in order to be truly effective, creative, and fulfilled.
Instead of letting our days be ruled by the endless expectations we put upon ourselves, we can use that energy to create space for our needs. By taking simple steps to prioritize our well-being, we can shift our orientation away from chaos being the norm and reclaim our time and energy.
Here are 3 simple tools to help you get started:
- The "Reverse To-Do List" At the end of the day, write a list of all the things you accomplished today, no matter how small. This simple practice shifts your focus from what's still pending to what you've already achieved, fostering a sense of accomplishment and for those who need it, permission to rest.
- The "Blank Slate Challenge" Purposely leave blank spaces in your calendar and resist the urge to fill them. If the thought of "free time" makes you squirmy, create a list of things you might like to do to use as a reference point. This practice helps to break the cycle of constant scheduling and create space for more rest and rejuvenation.
- Practice the "One-Minute Pause" Take mini-breaks to reconnect with your breath. Whenever you feel overwhelmed or stressed, simply stop what you're doing, close your eyes, and take a few deep breaths. This simple practice can help you reset and refocus.
Now, small steps are essential, BUT they need direction. Think of it like climbing a mountain: each step up is important, but without mapping out a route to the summit, you might find yourself on a really long and cold mental health walk. 😂
That's where your dreams come in. They are your summit, your guiding light.
