Hi ,
Walking in Chicago has provided me with some of the best (and worst) stories. From that time during lockdown when a saw a raccoon drinking a Pabst Blue Ribbon beer against a tree like he was about to go home to a "house fulla screamin' kids" and needed to take the edge off. To startling a mouse sitting gingerly in the middle of a purple cone flower cleaning his ears. To watching a pack of coyotes romp in the snow along the bank of the Chicago river. For a city girl, I feel very connected to wildlife through my walks.
But the thing I notice most about the paths is that they're always full on sunny days. The other days? It's just me and Flashlight.
I often wonder what people do on those days. The treadmill? Skip it all together? I'm definitely judging here, but it seems like the perfectionistic tendencies of wellness have infiltrated the park. Meaning, generally speaking, people are only inclined to go outside if it's nice out... This is scary and a little bit sad.
It's the:
"I only drink water if I have the right cup."
"I only do high intensity exercise because it burns more calories."
"I can't exercise if I'm wearing jeans."
"I can't walk if it's rainy - I'll get wet!"
The obstacles that we place in front of our physical activity are laden with toxic wellness ideals. And in truth, they aren't good for our health. When we're waiting for conditions to be convenient, we run the risk of missing out on consistency - which is largely where any habit is built as well as where change happens.
But that's not all. There are some MAJOR benefits to getting out in weather that is less than ideal. For example, walking in the rain helps:
- Clean the air for better quality
- Cool your body temp during exercise
- Calms the mind through scents and sounds
- Encourage a sense of achievement because it feels like a challenge.
My dream for the Fall in Love With Walking Challenge is for us to e-x-p-a-n-d our capacity for moving outside. To crave it even. To move with the seasons, watching the changes happen instead of being shocked by them.
And autumn is the perfect, most beautiful time to start building up your habit.
So are you ready for the adventure? We start on 10/13. Register below and I can't wait to hear the stories you uncover!
