Hello ,
Yesterday things were strange. It started while I was waiting for the bus.
A young guy appeared (1). He was listening to something on his phone and singing or chanting (2) along with it. And he was loud, very loud. At the same time, he was moving to the rhythm of what he was listening to. It was almost like he was marching (3). Then he'd suddenly stop moving. There were some hand movements, too.
I looked at him as he moved past me. Most of the time, he had his eyes closed. I wondered if he was on drugs or something.
He was in the middle of the street when my bus pulled up. The driver went slowly, waiting for him to move off the street. However, he didn't, so the bus driver beeped the horn (4). The young guy immediately stepped onto the footpath (5).
A couple of us got on the bus. Then the driver closed the back door. The strange young guy wanted to get on. He went to the front door, and the bus driver yelled at him, asking for his ticket. He showed it, and after a few more words from the bus driver, he quietly sat down.
We headed off. At one stop, a young lady got on the bus. She spoke to the driver, telling him she wanted to leave the plastic bag she was carrying on the bus for a friend to pick up from another stop. She moved towards the bus door.
The driver was a little surprised and asked her to explain what she was doing again. Then he told her to give it to him, and he put the plastic bag with him near the driver's seat.
I was really surprised. Surprised that someone would use the bus like a courier, to transport (6) a bag without it being with a person. I know you can book a taxi to pick up or drop off goods, but I had never heard of people sending packages on a passenger bus!
Do you have days when strange things happen? Maybe someone is doing something that isn't really normal, or maybe they are asking something that is very different. Let me know if you do...
Hoping you have a very normal week!
Andrea
(1) appeared - we could (suddenly) see him
(2) chanting - saying things in the rhythm of music, but not following the tune (singing)
(3) marching - 'walking', but in rhythm, like a group of soldiers
(4) beeped the horn - pushed the button in the bus to make a 'beep, beep', or 'honk, honk' sound
(5) footpath - the place by the side of a street where people can walk. Other words are pavement (British English) or sidewalk (American English)
(6) transport - to carry, like a truck 'carries' goods
