Finding the things I need for free

Because I'm a bargain hunter!

Howdy ,

I have a new challenge. There's a room I know of (not my flat!) that needs a new look for autumn. I have offered to decorate (1) it.

The good thing about decorating for autumn is you can use things from nature.

Pine cones (2) and acorns (3) are cheap when you find them under a tree. I just needed to go for a walk and collect things. The tricky part was knowing where to go.

A week ago, I got off a train, but it was a long wait for the bus, so I decided to walk part of the way. Along the path were some pine cones. Nice-looking ones! The bad thing was I didn't have a bag with me, so I picked up as many as I could carry in my hands.

As I got on the bus, the driver looked at me strangely. Thankfully, I didn't have to show my ticket - I don't know what I would have done with the pine cones while I found the ticket in my purse (4)!

When I arrived home, I cleaned the pine cones, so they were insect-free. I also put a plastic bag with the things I carry with me when I go out!

A couple of days later, walking along a street, I found some freshly fallen chestnuts (5). I gathered the good ones in my plastic bag.

What I really wanted was some acorns. However, the ones under most of the trees I go past aren't very nice. They have insect holes in them, and most of them have split.

But while walking to the bakery, what did I find? Beautiful, shiny acorns with no insect holes. I gathered a heap of them.

Most times, when I've stopped to collect things, I've been on a street. I have no idea what people looking out their windows think.

They can laugh at me if they want to. I don't care - I've found the things I want for free. The bargain hunter in me is extremely happy.

do you decorate your house differently for every season? Do you like decorating? Are you good at it?

Enjoy the colours of nature,

Andrea

(1) decorate - add things (decorations) so that something (a room, a Christmas tree) looks beautiful

(2) pine cones - the hard, wooden 'fruit' of the pine tree (a tree with needles, not leaves)

(3) acorns - the small, hard seed of an oak tree

(4) purse - the place ladies keep their money and cards (credit cards, health card, ID card, etc.).

(5) chestnut - chestnuts are the fruit of chestnut trees. The nut is dark brown, but when they are on the tree they have a thick protective layer around them that is covered in prickles. You can eat some chestnuts - in Germany they sell them roasted at the Christmas Market.
