Greetings ,
I was listening to a podcast recently where the person talking was a creativity expert. He discussed the point that when we have ideas, we should write them down so that we remember them and can do something with them.
That is what I do for my writing. When a subject pops into my mind (1), I put it on a list. Then, when it’s time to write I can choose a subject from the list and start typing.
(Note — it’s not always how it is. Sometimes there’s nothing on the list and I sit for ages, trying to think of something I can write about!)
The other day I had an idea. It wasn’t just the subject, I could see the whole thing, even how it was going to end. The trouble was, it was a bad moment to try and write it down — I had just started work. So I made a mental note and kept doing what I was doing.
Bad mistake!
Later, when things were quiet, I remembered I had had a writing idea I was going to record. But do you think I could remember what it was?
Not a chance!!
I thought about it for a while, but the idea didn’t come back to me. So I did other things. Often when I take my mind off remembering something and think about something else, the forgotten thing will pop back into my mind.
This time that didn’t work.
As I was going to sleep, I thought about the mystery topic again. And suddenly something came to mind. I don’t know if it was my first idea, but it was something I could work with.
However it was late and I was in bed — I was too comfortable (lazy!) to note it down.
I focussed extra hard to try and remember it. Nevertheless, by morning that idea was gone, too.
Hopefully I’ve learned the lesson now — when I have an idea, I need to write it down.
Straight away!!
I hope you don't have problems like that. But if you do (or someone you know does), let me know.
Wishing you a week of not forgetting your ideas,
Andrea
