Warm (😉) greetings ,
In my part of the world it's summer. I have always loved summer, with its long days, blue skies and hot weather.
A Tasmanian summer isn't always great. Some years the weather can be wonderful, with weeks of perfect sunshine that extend into autumn. It meant we could make great use of our local beaches and go for a quick swim after school (or work).
Then other years, I never really felt that we had summer. It was warm, not hot, and rained a lot. One year, the weatherman on TV pointed out just how cool the summer before had been. He told us the temperature that day (late spring, or maybe early summer) was the first time it had been so hot (over 30° C) for more than 18 months. The thermometer didn't even make it to 30° the whole previous summer 😲.
It's the same where where I live now. I have experienced some great summers here. The days have been really hot (sometimes record-breaking) and it hasn't rained for weeks. But last summer wasn't one like that. It rained regularly. There were some nicer days, when it was warm and sunny, but the temperatures seldom reached what I would call 'hot'.
So far, so good this summer. At the weekend, it was hot, really hot! I didn't need to look at a thermometer. I know it was hot for a few reasons:
- I drank a lot of extra water
- I didn't need to be in direct sunshine all the time, it was great walking in the shade ⛱️
- I walked a lot slower because it would have been too stressful to walk fast
For me the hot days are fine, especially after a summer like last year. However, there is one thing that I have learnt. It is not good being a tourist when it is super-hot. It takes all the fun out of exploring a new city when the thermometer goes too high. It's just too hard trying to walk and see everything and drink enough.
What are your thoughts on really hot days? Do you like them? I know some people don't. Can you still do the normal things you do every day, or is it just too exhausting? Let me know! Also tell me anything you do to survive.
See you again next week,
Andrea
