Getting to the top of things

Greetings ,

I like climbing hills and mountains and enjoying the view from the top.

But I should add I'm scared of heights!

While my feet are safely on the ground, I'm fine. The tops of most of the hills and mountains I've been on have had enough space at the top that I haven't felt scared. And the views have been amazing!

However, if there's a cliff (1), I find standing near the edge of that very scary. I'm careful to stay a safe distance from the edge, but my heart still starts beating faster.

If there's a tall building in a city I'm visiting, I usually go to the top for a look. I've even done a tree-top walk.

With a building, I use the stairs (if there are any). Often in the old cathedrals and churches of Europe, the stairs in the bell towers are made of stone - nice and solid.

Sometimes the stairs are wooden, like in the Asinelli tower in Bologna. Even there, I still felt safe.

Looking out the windows at the top of a more modern building is fine. But I prefer it when the windows don't start down at floor level. When they do, I start to feel scared, like I can step off the edge. I know it doesn't make sense - there's glass there. Even so, I stay away from the 'edge'/windows!

The top of the Sky Tower in Auckland is the scariest viewing platform I've been to. Looking out the glass windows around the edge of the platform was fine.

What freaked me out was the floor. Parts of it were made of glass so you could look down to the ground. But this was part of the floor - you could stand on the glass and walk on it.

I know it was thick enough to be safe, but there was NO WAY I could step on it. While I was up there I walked on the 'solid' parts of the floor, parts that you couldn't see through!

Do you go to the top of things to so you can enjoy the view? Are you scared of heights? Feel free to let me know....

Catch you next time,

Andrea

(1) cliff - part of a hill or mountain where the 'side' goes straight down (or almost straight down)
