Are elves only in children's stories?

They might be real!

Hi ,

At first I thought I was seeing things. An elf out in public?

No, I'm not talking about a doll (1). It wasn't a picture or someone in their Carnival costume early, either.

It was a real elf!

He wasn't small like regular elves - I'd say he was a bit shorter than me, but no more than 15 cm shorter than my 170+ cm.

His clothes were normal; there wasn't any special outfit (2) or a colour that made him noticeable (3). If I remember correctly, I think he was wearing jeans, like heaps of other people, so he blended right in (4).

And there definitely wasn't a long, pointy hat. There wasn't a hat at all, and with the cold weather we've had, he could have worn one. A lot of other people were.

He had a nice-looking face that gave you the feeling he was friendly. His nose was a perfect fit for his face - very cute, definitely not big or ugly.

He wore glasses that had thin metal frames (5). They weren't trendy or modern. I'd say 'classic' or 'timeless'.

When I saw him, he was reading. I wasn't close enough to see the book, but I think it was a story. It wasn't a list of any sort, so if he was a Christmas elf, he must have been on his post-Christmas break.

That would make sense. Santa's helpers would probably have a few weeks off after the Christmas rush. I've never thought about where an elf would go on holiday, but Germany would be a reasonable choice (6) - warmer than the North Pole, but not super hot.

If an elf's work includes caring for Santa's reindeer, it'd be a break from that, too!

Are you curious and want to ask how I knew it was an elf.

It was simple.

While he tried to blend in (4) and look like a regular person, there was one problem.

His ears.

They were typical 'elf ears'. You know, ears that are pointy at the top. They weren't hidden; everyone could see them.

I admit, sometimes my brain works in strange ways. Sorry 🥴. But seeing a guy with pointy ears is totally true!!

Please let me know if you think you might have seen an elf, fairy, troll or leprachaun (7). It'd make me feel less strange!

Have a magical (😉) week,

Andrea

(1) doll - a toy for children that normally looks like a baby or person e.g. Barbie

(2) outfit - a set of clothes worn together

(3) noticeable - easy to see

(4) to blend in - to look a lot like the other things that are close

(5) frames (of glasses) - the outside bit that holds the glass/goes around the glass

(6) reasonable choice - fair, a choice based on reason, a 'logical' choice

(7) leprachaun - little green man from Ireland. An Irish 'elf'. You say it lep-ra-corn
