Hey ,
It amazes me, the number of boats that stop in Frankfurt as they cruise along the Main. Especially at this time of year, when it is cold and grey outside. I guess the travellers want to see the different Christmas Markets in the cities they stop in.
I remember having an interesting conversation with some friends years ago about the idea of doing a tour on a cruise boat.
One friend could see all the advantages of travelling this way.
You go onboard and unpack once. The tour takes you through a number of different cities. You can go off and enjoy them, but you come back to the one room each evening. There's no need to move your suitcase from one hotel to the next.
Plus a lot of the travelling happens after you are back onboard each evening. You don't have to use energy or waste 'holiday' time getting to the next destination. It happens automatically, while you sleep.
Another friend and I had a different opinion.
We felt being on a cruise boat wouldn't give us enough freedom. Yes, passengers can get off each day and explore, but they must be back on board at a certain time - or be left behind!
As well, I want to spend more than a few hours in a place. A few days is better, so I have time to see things that day-trippers (1) don't have time to see. I want to 'feel' the city and also try any special local food.
I guess I should also point out that I don't travel with heaps of gear and I use a backpack, not a suitcase, so it's easy to put it on and walk from place to place.
Maybe I'm just too independent at the moment. Maybe when I'm old(er) and grey(er), I will think that going on a cruise is a great way to travel. I'll love the convenience of only unpacking my bag once.
Maybe... Or maybe I'm just the wrong type of person...
Have you ever done a cruise? On a river or on the sea? Did you enjoy the experience? If you haven't, do you think you would enjoy a cruise, or wouldn't you feel free enough? I'm curious to read your opinion.
Enjoy the wintery weather ❄️
