Finding the right place to stay

Not all of them were wonderful!

Hello ,

Last week I followed the Way of St James (1), walking from Metz to Vaucouleurs in France. And it stayed dry - I didn't have a drop of rain the whole time 😀.

Monday and Tuesday, I basically followed the Mosel River or canals (2) of the Mosel. It made for easy walking. Because it was along the river, it was quite flat. And because there are a heap of towns along the river, the path is well-made.

However, this area isn't popular with tourists. I didn't have many hotels or guesthouses to choose from. That was fine - I found what I needed.

The guesthouses were great! Two of them had a little kitchen, where all the guests could cook if they wanted to. I found that surprising.

The owners had put a lot of thought into the places. One was decorated with all sorts of lovely things that made the place feel old. Some of the decorations might have been real antiques (3).

However, there were also modern touches, like the shower and the heater. The owner warned me about how 'smart' the heater was, and I should have listened more carefully because I couldn't get it to work!

On Thursday night, I stayed in a hotel. The building was old, but inside it had been modernised. I was impressed with the mix of colours in my room and the artwork in the corridor.

I finished my walk in Vaucouleurs. Then I travelled to Nancy to the hotel I'd booked.

You know me, I love to research and plan, right?

Well, I failed!

As I entered the hotel, I had a sinking feeling in my stomach. It wasn't what I was expecting.

My room was horrible! I felt like crying 😥. Looking back, I should have found another place online and left.

I checked out early Saturday morning. It was a lovely day outside, and I explored the central city.

Although I'll remember that horrible hotel room for a l-o-n-g time, thankfully, I have some good memories of Nancy, as well.

Have you ever had a really bad hotel room, ? Did you stay or leave? Should I have left?

Wishing you lovely hotel rooms on your travels,

Andrea

(1) the Way of St James - Jakobsweg or Camino de Santiago

(2) canals - places with flowing water that have been built by man, they're not natural

(3) antiques - really old items that were used back in history. They may be valuable, too.
