When driving a car is really convenient

Hi ,

I'm writing about transportation again today.

A long time ago, I wrote how I thought owning a car in Frankfurt wasn't necessary (1) due to the number of public transport options in the Frankfurt area.

Well, my thoughts have changed a bit. Maybe that's because I live outside Frankfurt now.

Yes, it's really easy for me to travel from my home to Frankfurt every day. There's a good commuter train connection, and (usually!) it runs perfectly. I get on the train and 22 minutes later I'm in the middle of the city.

Sometimes there are problems, but generally, everything's OK. I plan my trips to allow for short delays.

However, trying to visit the little towns around my town can be more difficult. Buses that go directly to some towns make things quite easy. You get on the bus, and away you go. It's just like a train.

But it isn't as easy to travel to other towns. The transport connections are more complex (2). To get to one town, I have to catch two trains or a bus and a train. I can do it, but it takes longer.

Then, if there's a problem with the trains (or buses), it can take for-ev-er!

I'll share one example. I had visited this town and it was time to go home. At the train station, I learned that the train had been cancelled. I needed to wait 30 minutes for the next one. As it was the middle of winter, I walked to the next station to keep warm.

The train arrived, and I travelled to the town where I had to change trains.

Guess what?

The same thing happened - the train to my town had been cancelled, and I had to wait for the next one (another 30-minute wait).

A trip that should have taken about 30 minutes took 2 hours!

If I drove by car, the trip would take about 20 minutes. AND, I wouldn't have to wait at a train station (or two!).

That sounds much more comfortable (3) and convenient (4).

What do you think? Is owning a car good, even in a place with lots of public transport?

Until next time,

Andrea

(1) necessary - needed. If something isn't necessary, it's not needed or wanted.

(2) more complex - with more parts to it, with more things you have to think about

(3) comfortable - good for my body (e.g. comfortable cloths or shoes, or a nice warm car!)

(4) convenient - best for my needs, causing the least difficulty
