It felt like I was back on the farm

Dear ,

If you were in the centre of Frankfurt Thursday to Saturday last week, you would have been surrounded with all things farming.

It was Harvest Festival, so there were tractors and stalls with animals, honey and handmade goods like jam and even baskets. Of course, there were lots of food stalls as well.

I love animals, so I had a look at the cows and pigs. On Friday morning on my way to work (about 7:00 a.m.) I said 'Good morning' to the geese and then patted one of the little ponies. Interestingly, each time I walked past the alpaca stall (several times over the three days), the smaller alpaca was always eating!

One stall that always amazes me is the apple stall. In it is a display of heaps of different varieties of apple, most of which I have never heard of (and Tasmania is the apple-growing region of Australia!).

The old tractors are always worth a look.

There is a huge difference when you compare them with the size, power and technology of the modern machines. Even 25 years ago, Dad's modern tractor was quite luxurious - it had better features for the driver than my car!

There is also a lot of information at the Harvest Festival. This year I found brochures about dairy farms in Hesse. They also had some cute 'cows' for people (children?) to 'milk'.

I didn't bother - I've milked heaps of cows and a couple of goats in my time. But let me say, the udders on these 'cows' looked extremely realistic! The older models a few years ago had what looked like rubber gloves for people to squeeze.

The usual festival food stalls were there. One with an autumn/harvest theme served hot pumpkin soup. I didn't try it. But I made sure that I visited the stall selling potato fritters. Yum! And they'll be back for the Federweisser Festival in front of the Liebfrauen Church, which starts at the end of this week 😋.

Have you visited a Harvest Festival? Ever? If you have, let me know your favourite part - is it the animals, the machinery, the food or something else?

'Bye for now,

Andrea
