What colour does she really want?

Howdy ,

My sister recently had a baby.

This was a girl after a number of boys, so I emailed and asked if she’d like me to knit (1) something. As she doesn’t live near me, I attached a colour chart (2) of the wool I knit baby things from. Using that, she could choose what colour she wanted.

She quickly replied that she would like something and gave me the number of the colour she liked best, plus what other colours would be OK if I couldn’t get her favourite.

So I visited the wool shop.

I told the lady the number of the colour I wanted, and we checked the number on the colour chart in the shop. This chart isn’t just pictures of the wool; it has a small sample of each colour.

To my surprise, the colour my sister had chosen was bright red! It wasn’t at all like the medium pink of the chart I had downloaded from the company website. I pulled out my device and showed the lady who was serving me.

This has happened to me before.

I said I would knit something for another pregnant lady I knew and pulled out my tablet so she could choose a colour. But what she selected (3) looked almost brown when I saw it in real life — not what she had said she wanted.

Going back to the wool for my sister’s baby, I was nerdy and matched the picture on the digital colour chart to a similar (4) colour on the chart in the shop. They had some of that colour in the shop, so I purchased it.

My sister had told me that ‘any of those pinks or purples would be great’ so I’m pretty sure the colour I’ve chosen is OK.

However, I’m also curious (5) — what colour did she think she’d chosen from the picture on her screen? A pink, or did she really want bright red?

I can remember when she was about eight or nine, red was her favourite colour…

How is it for you, ? Do you choose colours from a picture on your computer when you shop online? Is the thing you bought the colour you thought it would be when you finally see it? What do you do if it's not the right colour?

As always, I love reading what you have to say.

Catch you next time,

Andrea

(1) to knit - make clothes (e.g. pullovers or scarves) using wool and needles

(2) colour chart - a document with all the colours you can get that wool (or paint, or whatever) in, with the special number or code for each one

(3) selected - chose

(4) similar - almost the same

(5) curious - would like to know, have the question in my mind
