I finally see my first snake in Germany

A live snake!

Hiya ,

We have snakes in Tasmania. They are poisonous, and if one bites you, you need to go to a hospital.

Growing up on a farm, I saw several snakes. It wasn't something that happened every day, or even every summer (it was too cold for snakes to be active in winter).  Nevertheless, I can tell you a couple of interesting stories.

Most of the snakes I saw were on the farm, and often I or other people in my family were dangerously close to them.

One less dangerous time, I was in my little car driving home. The snake was lying on the road, enjoying the warm sunshine. I didn't see anything until the last minute and felt my car go over something, like I had driven over a plastic water pipe (1). The problem was that there weren't usually water pipes across the road.

I looked in the rearview mirror (2) to see what it was, and the 'pipe' was going crazy, looking to attack the enemy that had just hurt it. It was heaps bigger than most of the snakes I had seen. I was extremely thankful for the protection of my car, and kept driving!

Here in Germany, I have heard different information. Some people say there are no snakes here. Others say there are no poisonous snakes. I have also heard that there is one poisonous snake, but it lives up in the mountains, so most people never see one.

I had a surprise last week. Someone said they had just seen a snake in the garage. I found the Caretaker and went to investigate.

They were right, a snake was curled up by the garage door. The Caretaker left for a moment and came back with a bucket. Three of us then worked to get the snake into the bucket.

It was tricky, but we succeeded. Here's the photo.

So I can now say that there are snakes in Germany, even in urban (3) areas. I've seen one with my own eyes!

Have you ever seen a snake here in Germany. Or anywhere else in the world? Let me know if you have!

Have a snake-free week!!

Andrea

(1) pipe - a long, narrow, usually round thing that takes water from one place to another, like to the toilet or shower inside your house

(2) rearview mirror - the mirror in the car that show you what's out the back window without you turning your head right around to have a look

(3) urban areas - areas with houses, schools, shops etc. Not a rural area - an area with just farms.
