I like spending time in the water

But it's been a while!

Hey ,

I grew up in a coastal area (1), so time at the beach and swimming were part of our life. When we were young, Mum would take us, perhaps after school on those hot days just after we started classes in the new school year. The beach was about a five-minute drive from school, so it worked really well.

A few years later, we moved to a new place and lived further (2) from the beach. Thankfully, swimming and time at the beach were still part of my routine because it wasn't long until I had my driver's licence. Now, I could take myself (and whoever else wanted to go along).

Then I discovered the local swimming pool and swam there regularly. One summer I joined the early morning swimmers, doing laps (3) before work. It felt great; I shouldn't have stopped 😕.

When I moved to a new city, a friend told me she liked to swim. So, that summer, we swam at our local pool a couple of times a week.

We also ended up going on a holiday together. Our accommodation had at least two swimming pools. Every day (sometimes twice a day!), we used the long pool where we could do laps.

On another holiday we stayed in a smaller hotel, not a big resort. Each morning, when we went out for our swim, we were the only ones in the pool. It was great!

Then I moved to Germany. I haven't been swimming over here. There are a few different reasons. Not living near the beach is a big one, but I haven't been to a swimming pool either.

Well, I have fewer excuses (4) now. The flat I live in now is quite close to a big aquatic centre (5). It's about a fifteen-minute walk away.

On Saturday, I was walking past, so I went in to look at the ticket prices. Now I'm all set. I have the opening times and prices. Hopefully, this is the year I'll get organised and start swimming again.

Do you like swimming, ? Is the beach better, or a pool? How about just spending time at the beach? Is it a good place to relax, or is it too hot and sandy?

Catch you next time,

Andrea

(1) a coastal area - an area that is next to the sea

(2) further - a greater distance (than something else)

(3) laps - going from one end of a swimming pool to another and back again. Or running around and around a sports track - each time you go around once is one lap.

(4) excuse - 'reason' for doing (or not doing) something. For example, I sat inside all day yesterday. My excuse is that it was too cold outside. Excuses can be good or poor (e.g. I don't have my homework with me because the dog ate it.)

(5) aquatic centre - a complex with swimming pools (lap pools, childrens' pools, diving pools) and other facilities, like maybe a spa, sauna, kiosk etc.
