Hi ,
People have different ideas about what makes a 'good' cafe.
For my friend, it's all about an excellent cup of coffee. Several times over the last couple of years, we've visited new cafes, not our old regulars. She often orders a cappuccino. But afterwards, she tells me that she was disappointed, that it wasn't the 'great' cup of coffee she had hoped for.
As I don't drink coffee, that's not important for me. My thing is the food.
I want a range of sweet things, most importantly, chocolate sweet things. They don't have to be fancy (1); simple things are fine as long as they're full of flavour. When I find a cafe that does good chocolate cakes, slices (2), or biscuits, I regularly buy things there. (I'm careful how many sweet things I eat, but if it's a sugar day, I want something great!)
While it can be convenient to buy things 'to go' sometimes, you want (or need) to sit down.
So a pleasant area with chairs and tables is a must.
But it gets tricky. Cafes that are well known as being 'good' become very busy. It's great for the cafe owner, having so much business. But it can be a problem...
I'm not a fan of super popular cafes. At least, I prefer not to visit them when they are crazy busy. It can be hard to find a table. Yes, you can always book. However, unless there's something special to celebrate, I want to visit spontaneously, so booking ahead doesn't work.
Then there's the noise. If you are sitting alone at a cafe, the noise from other people chatting and cups and plates clinking (3) might be perfectly OK. But if you're having a coffee with a friend or two, trying to hear them when they talk can be a big problem.
With modern home office or mobile working arrangements, some people like to do work for their company from a cafe. In a really noisy cafe, that would be very difficult!
What are your thoughts, ? What is it about a cafe that makes it good (or great!) for you - the food, drink, service or something else?
'Bye for today,
Andrea
(1) fancy - complicated, needing lots and lots of work to make
(2) slice - a sort of flat sweet thing, not something that rises in the oven like a cake, but not biscuits/cookies that are baked as small, individual things. (Blechkuchen?)
(3) clinking - the noise when porcelain or glass things touch/hit each other
