Why is it that so many people love Hamburg?

Hi ,

For the first few years I was in Germany, I asked people which cities I should visit. The replies were interesting. Most people said Hamburg and if it wasn't their first choice, it was in their top three. They talked about the harbour and being by the water. They also spoke about the architecture of the Warehouse District.

With so many recommendations, I wanted to go for a look.

I need to be honest - I went in winter, the first week in January. It was cold, but there were still a few Christmas Market stalls open.

I had a good look around. It was easy to find the Inner Alster, but I also went for an evening walk by the Outer Alster and watched the sky turn amazing colours as the sun set.

At St. Pauli Piers, I hopped on a ferry. It was amazing seeing the the harbour close up. Everything is so big!

The Elbe Philharmonic Hall was still being built so I could only imagine how it might look when finished.

A must was the Old Elbe Tunnel. It was fascinating. It's width (or how narrow it is!) became totally clear when a couple of modern cars drove through. I was also impressed with the artistic details on the walls. I didn't expect the designers to try and make it beautiful!

I read that you should go to St Michael's Church to hear the trumpeter play the morning or evening hymn. In Prague I had watched the trumpet player on the Astronomical clock, so I wanted to hear the one at St Michael's. I was there for the morning hymn and afterwards I looked inside the church and climbed the clock tower (but I took the lift back down).

There were a number of things, like visit the Miniature Wonderworld, that I didn't have time to do, so there are lots of reasons to visit again.

I like Hamburg. I enjoyed my time there and want to go back. However, I'm not sure that I would say it is the 'best' city in Germany, or my favourite city.

Let me know what you think. Are you someone who just loves Hamburg or do you have a different favourite city? What are the top things you say a tourist should do in Hamburg, or whichever city you say is best?

Have a fantastic day,

Andrea
