email vs snail mail 🐌 Which is better?

Hello there, ,

Here it is, the time of the week when I put fingers to keyboard and type my thoughts for this English Newsletter. And that got me thinking about the mail we receive. Do you get old-fashioned letters written on paper anymore, or is all your mail electronic?

If there is anything in my 'non-virtual' mailbox, it is usually a bill, or sometimes advertising brochures. I may get a Christmas card or two, but birthday cards are rare (another sign I'm old πŸ˜‘).

Following the trend, I had changed to writing only emails. Especially when I first moved to Germany, I sent lots of emails, telling friends and family what was happening and what life was like over here.

Then my email correspondence became less frequent. There were two reasons. Firstly, people didn't write to me so often and when they did, it was usually quite short. And secondly, I didn't keep writing to other people. It was hard to fit 'email writing time' into my schedule and even if I found the time, actually typing seemed like hard work I just didn't want to do.

Then, last year, I decided to write old-fashioned, snail mail letters to my close contacts back in Australia - which I did regularly, the whole year.

I think Mum became worried when I didn't answer her email in a 'reasonable' time. With other people, I sent a short email telling them to expect my reply by post.

Putting pen to paper was fun πŸ˜€. It also made me aware of how bad my handwriting had become (it has been interesting to watch it improve).

Although I didn't receive any letters back last year, I decided to keep writing them this year and guess what? People are starting to answer by letter! One sister said that she has enjoyed starting to write again. It was amazing simply getting a letter from another sister, given her large family and busy life.

Do you ever write letters these days? Or receive them? How about emails - do you write to friends or just use chat or messaging apps? Hit 'Reply' and share your thoughts.

Have a great week,

Andrea
