How To Get Disaster Unemployment Benefits

Today I want to share a couple of hurricane related resources that either individuals who were impacted by Hurricane Ida or health professionals can use.

For individuals who had home/property damage or you need funds to pay for temporary lodging following a hurricane, you want to apply for FEMA. This is nothing new to anyone who has lived in Texas for an extended amount of time, but if you need a refresher, check out the guide titled FEMA Assistance: How To Apply For Federal Disaster Assistance.

If you or someone you know is no longer able to work due to Hurricane Ida, the best thing to do is to apply for Disaster Unemployment Assistance. This is a form of temporary unemployment payments for individuals who meet any of the following:

In the guide titled How To Apply For Disaster Unemployment Assistance, you can learn more about who qualifies and how you can apply for this disaster unemployment program.

STEAR Program - Helping Seniors Evacuate During Hurricanes And Other Disasters

Last week, when there was uncertainty about where Ida would land a someone asked about programs that help senior citizens to evacuate during hurricanes and it turns out there is one called STEAR or State of Texas Emergency Assistance Registry.

This program is free to sign up for and is meant to help individuals with limited mobility or disabilities in times of crisis like a hurricane.

The program does state that they help individuals with transportation assistance for home evacuations. It also says that services are not guaranteed. That being said if you think you'll need help getting out of your home during a hurricane it's probably best to sign up anyway.

You can learn more and even sign up for the STEAR Program by visiting the Texas Division of Emergency Management website.
