Hi friend,
Last time we talked about your message, and knowing wetin you sabi.
Today, the third pillar. Strategy. Your direction.
Let me start somewhere you might not expect.
School.
For the first eighteen, twenty, twenty-something years of our lives, structure was handed to us. Terms and holidays. Timetables. Deadlines we didn't set. Reports that told us how we were doing. We didn't build any of it. We just showed up inside it.
Then it stopped.
Some of us stepped into a job and inherited a new structure. Clock in, clock out, appraisal in March. Not ours either, but at least it held a shape.
And then, for many of us, that went too. You started working for yourself. Or your health changed. Or your life stopped fitting a standard week.
And suddenly there was no structure at all, except the one you built.
Here's the part nobody says out loud: we were never taught how to build one.
We were taught how to perform inside someone else's. That's a completely different skill.
So we improvise. We download another person's morning routine. We borrow a system built for a brain that isn't ours, a body that isn't ours, a life that isn't ours. And when it collapses in week three, we don't blame the system. We blame ourselves.
You are not undisciplined. You were handed a gap and told it was a character flaw.
This is the same thread we've been pulling all along. We outsourced structure the way we outsourced everything else, to school, to employers, to society, to whoever seemed to have it figured out. And we never went back and built our own.
So what is strategy, then?
Strategy is not a plan you write and pin up. It's not a colour-coded year.
Strategy is a set of decisions made in advance, built for the person you actually are.
Read that again. For the person you actually are. Not the person you'd be with more energy, more time, more help, fewer symptoms, fewer responsibilities.
When you decide things in advance, you stop having to decide them while you're tired. That's the whole point. You are not making better decisions in the moment, you are making fewer of them.
And here is what people get wrong.
Slowing down is not the absence of strategy. Slowing down is a strategy.
No gra gra. Choosing a pace you can actually hold is a decision, and often the harder one, because everything around you is rewarding speed.
The question is not how fast are you moving. It's do you know where you're pointed.
You can be very busy and completely still.
This is why the third instrument in The Autonomy Code is called Claim Your Direction. Not find your direction, as though it's hiding somewhere. Claim it. Decide it. Own it, the way you claimed yourself and claimed your message.
I had to build my own. I call it a Methodical Action Plan, and it's how I run my seasons now. I'll show you how it works another time.
For now, this week's quiet question.
Whose structure are you still living inside?
School's? A former employer's? Your family's idea of what a productive life looks like? Someone online whose system you adopted and never questioned?
Just notice it. You can decide what to do about it later.
In my next letter, the fourth pillar. Relationships. Your circle.
