The black vote is the most feared vote in all of human existence. Black people were bombed, lynched, maimed, raped, murdered, tortured, beaten, threatened, assaulted, battered, burned, and mutilated just to keep us from becoming voters. Society even denied our personhood to keep us from exercising our Constitutional rights. When that failed they constructed voting areas to dilute our power. They created poll taxes and literacy test just to deny us the right to be voters.
In Arizona, all political parties fail to have meaningful conversations with our community. That is why we decided to build something that would have those conversations with our folks on our terms, not their terms. Something that would convert people from just simply voting into voters. Arizona Black Voter Initiative understands the difference between the verb vote and the noun voter.
A voter is a person who cares about the community, who is informed and who wants to create a better world. We also understand that our community is full of voters who have had their rights taken away or who have never been empowered to appreciate the value of their own vote. We are going to work with people to restore their rights so they can become voters and we will embrace members of our community and educate them about the power of becoming the voter they were destined to be.
Our purpose is to embrace all mid and low efficacy black voters. Educate black people on the importance of voting and then empower them to become voters. Envelope them into our community and encourage them to get involved in electoral politics by running for office or supporting those who are running for office so we can build black political power.
Embrace: we must love all black people. That includes black trans, black gays, light-skinned, dark-skinned, mixed-race, immigrants, mixed-marriage, etc. We must love all black people, because people who join our organization are looking for friends.
Educate: We must explain why before we explain how.
Empower: We must put people in positions to control their future and provide the tools necessary to put them in a place to succeed.
Envelope: We must wrap our people into our organization.
Encourage: we must lift each other up and support each other in this world of electoral politics so we can build black political power.
By 2039 we want to have elected the first black governor, senator, attorney general or secretary of state. That is why we are build the political infrastructure now to achieve the goal in the future.
We look forward to building with you.
In Solidarity,
Team AZBVI.
