What if We Listened Without the Story?

image

Hi, ,

As I keep exploring the impact of listening on my relationships, I've come to a realization: much of the time, I’m not really listening. Not fully, anyway. Instead, I’ve got this background story running in my head—one that shapes how I hear what’s being said. I’m constantly interpreting, assuming, and jumping to conclusions before the other person even finishes speaking.

Can you relate?

What would happen if we just let go of those stories? If we practiced listening to our loved ones without filtering their words through our preconceived ideas? I’m working on this myself, trying to hear my wife’s words as they are, without letting my brain rush ahead to its usual conclusions.

It’s a vulnerable place to be because it means opening myself up to hearing things I may not want to hear. But it also means I might discover things I didn’t expect—like her love and sincerity. I’m learning that real connection requires me to put down my defenses and allow her words to land before I judge or interpret them.

I invite you to try this with me: Next time you’re in a conversation with your mate (or others), listen without the story. See what happens when you let their words stand on their own, without jumping to conclusions.

More to come soon!
