Mitochondria Gallery is pleased to present its summer exhibition, Between Flame, Stone, and Tide, bringing together the practices of Alex Peter Idoko, Chika Idu, and Ejiro Fenegal. The exhibition explores how elemental forces shape narratives of memory, identity, belonging, and environmental responsibility.
Alex Peter Idoko. The pull she recognized. Pyrography, fabric, thread, and acrylic on canvas. 2026
Alex Peter Idoko's practice centers on the transformative potential of fire. Using a blowtorch to burn canvas and paper, he creates surfaces marked by destruction and renewal, where collage and embroidery introduce acts of repair and reconstruction. These material processes become meditations on nostalgia, presence, and belonging.
Chika Idu. Follow the path. Oil on canvas. 2026
Chika Idu's textured oil paintings, shaped with a palette knife, depict children immersed in aquatic landscapes. Balancing sensory immediacy with ecological awareness, his works examine the relationship between vulnerable communities and threatened environments, positioning water as both a site of play and a metaphor for environmental stewardship.
Ejiro Fenegal. Ndidiamaka. Bonded Marble. 2026
Ejiro Fenegal's marble sculptures draw on the medium's historical associations with permanence to commemorate the lives and experiences of women in her community. Through realistic busts animated by vibrant patinas, she reimagines marble as a contemporary archival material that preserves individual stories while affirming collective identity.
Together, the works of Idoko, Fenegal, and Idu bring Between Flame, Stone, and Tide into focus as an exploration of material transformation and human experience. Each artist investigates the ways memory, identity, and belonging are shaped by the elemental forces that define both personal and collective histories. The exhibition ultimately invites viewers to reflect on the enduring relationship between material, place, and the environments that sustain us.
