- What: this time I want to recommend to you this short book telling a piece of Spanish history. It focuses on the birth and growth of Mercadona, from a small family grocery business into Spain’s leading supermarket chain with over 1600 stores and hundreds of products sold by its own brand Hacendado. Mercadona's owner, Juan Roig, is a wildly successful Spanish entrepreneur with an estimated personal net worth of about 6 billions.
- It's for you if: you are interested in business stories and want to learn how a local family grocery store became a national retail chain through smart leadership and innovation.
- Key takeaways:
- Mercadona’s success is rooted in always putting the customer first, constantly adapting products and services to meet their evolving needs.
- Mercadona avoids traditional promotions and discounts, instead offering stable, consistently low prices year-round, which builds customer trust and simplifies shopping decisions.
- Employees are offered permanent contracts, above-average wages, performance bonuses, and significant training, but pressured to maintain high-quality standards
- Juan Roig is recognized for his customer-centric approach, continuous reinvestment of profits, and commitment to employee welfare and supplier partnerships.
