Bi-weekly Business Book 📚
The Algebra of Wealth: A Simple Formula for Financial Security
(Spanish Version, English version)
by Scott Galloway, American bestselling author, professor of marketing at NYU’s Stern School of Business, entrepreneur, and media personality known for his business insights.
- What: I recently bought this book at Pasajes, one of my favourite libraries in Madrid. It teaches you the basics of creating wealth and achieving financial independence, giving you an overview of how to optimize your decisions on key fields like work, entrepreneurship, investments, time, relationships, and health. A good starting point to then further explore each topic with more specific books.
- It's for you if: you want to gain some clarity and get advice on building financial security that goes beyond get-rich-quick schemes. It’s especially useful if you’re early in your career, seeking lasting freedom from money worries, or looking to make smarter decisions about earning, saving, investing, and living a meaningful life.
- Key takeaways:
- The author proposes the formula Wealth = Focus + (Stoicism × Time × Diversification). While I don't like these non-mathematical calculations, they effectively summarize the most important fields to consider.
- Focus on earning, not just saving: Instead of "following your passion," maximize your talent and skills to command a strong income, which forms the foundation for wealth building.
- Discipline over consumption: avoid lifestyle inflation and the “hedonic treadmill,” where you spend more as you earn more. Sustainable wealth is about what you keep, not just what you make.
- The power of Compounding: start investing as early as possible—time is your most valuable asset in growing wealth.
- Location and lifestyle choices: where you live and how you spend impact your financial future, so be open to making strategic life choices like relocating. On this topic, what is your opinion about doing business in Madrid? Is it a good place?
