I don't think we are ever prepared

Dear ,

When I was doing my doctorate in Minnesota, I lived in a senior apartment complex. It wasn’t unusual for me to share meals with neighbors who had stories stretching back decades… and then wake up one day to find their apartment empty.

Death wasn’t an abstract concept. It was part of my lived reality.

At the same time, I was doing research on death — exploring how we process it, talk about it, and live alongside it. My father and I had countless conversations about mortality. We explored what it means to live well, to die well, and to be remembered.

I thought that understanding death — academically, intellectually, even emotionally — would somehow prepare me for it.

But , I didn't. Here’s the truth:

No amount of knowledge or exposure makes grief easy when it’s your own.

That’s what I discovered when I lost my father. And that’s what I want to share with you next time. For now, know this: You’re not broken for grieving. You’re human. And there are ways to live fully again without leaving your grief — or your loved one — behind.

That’s why I created Life Is for Living — to help you find that path.

Enrollment opens in just a few weeks.

With care,

Dr. Sandra Hamilton
