Hi,
We have seen a sharp increase in the number of electrical contractors insisting that replacing existing plastic consumer units with metal consumer units is a legal requirement.
It is NOT a requirement (unless it is damaged) for an existing building to have the plastic consumer unit changed to a metal consumer unit. They can recommend it, but it is not a requirement, nor can they fail an EICR on the grounds you have a plastic consumer unit.
Side note: Sometimes, you can have a faulty MCB. If this is the case, an MCB typically costs between £4 and £6 and will take between 10 minutes and 30 minutes to replace, depending on consumer unit access.
Read our blog on EICR.
