In "All In Your Head - Week 3: Stress Test," Pastor Jared challenges us to rethink how we handle stress. Stress is not just about doing too much; it’s about being misaligned with God’s rhythm. Through Matthew 11:28-30, we learn that true rest means realigning our lives with Jesus, releasing control, and trusting God more than ourselves. It’s not about escaping challenges but walking through them differently with God’s strength.
Weekly Bible Study List
- Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV) - "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."
- Psalm 46:10 (NIV) - "Be still, and know that I am God."
- 1 Peter 5:7 (NIV) - "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you."
The Sunday Outline & Notes
Pastor Jared opens with a relatable analogy: a phone battery dying at the worst moment because of too many apps running in the background. Just like our phones, our lives can get drained when we run on empty—managing work, family, and personal responsibilities without rest.
Stress Is a Signal
Stress is more than just a feeling; it’s a signal indicating that we are carrying more than we were designed to bear. Stress affects both our physical and emotional well-being, leading to exhaustion, anxiety, and even despair.
The Invitation to Rest
Jesus invites the weary to find rest in Him (Matthew 11:28-30). Unlike the religious burdens of the Pharisees, Jesus offers a different yoke—one that shares the load rather than adding to it. True rest means walking through challenges differently, in step with Jesus.
3 Things to Understand About Rest to Overcome Stress
- Resting Means Realigning Our Lives - Just as a car’s misalignment requires fixing, our lives often need realigning with God’s will. Stress doesn’t come from doing too much; it’s about being out of sync with God’s rhythm. We must intentionally reset our lives to keep from drifting into burnout.
- Resting Means Releasing Control - Stress often arises from carrying too much at once—just like trying to bring all the grocery bags in one trip. Releasing control to God means acknowledging that trying to handle everything on our own is not strength but stubbornness. Trusting God with our burdens is an act of faith.
- Resting Means Trusting God More Than Ourselves - Stress thrives on the belief that if we don’t control everything, it will all fall apart. Yet Psalm 46:10 calls us to “Be still and know that I am God.” Trusting God means allowing Him to hold what we cannot. Letting go of the need to constantly hustle allows space for divine peace.
From Sermon to Action
We are challenged to stop spinning plates and surrender control to God. By choosing rest, we align with God’s purpose and discover freedom from stress. It’s not just about stopping activity—it’s about stopping the need to manage it all. In doing so, we embrace God’s rhythm of rest and peace.
