Hello, hello! I've got some news today, plus a book giveaway to share with stories from other fantasy and sci-fi authors.
First, though, I want to tell you a story.
One day, I had a small idea. A wizard unexpectedly returns to his hometown and upends the life of a woman there. OK, I thought, but why? What's his backstory? What really interesting thing is she up to that would make this homecoming badly timed? Who gets to do magic in this world? Who has power, and who doesn't?
I kept thinking of answers and new questions. The idea got bigger and bigger. I imagined an America with wizards in charge and women pressing for equal rights, retooled a real town in Maryland to be my setting, invented a cast of characters who settled in for the long haul in my head, and, basically, I've been living part-time in this world for years.
Now I get to invite other people in. Subversive, the first in the Clandestine Magic trilogy, is out today.
(I feel a bit faint. I can't believe this day is here, eight years after that small idea hit me.)
Some of you got an early look at this romantic fantasy book, and I so appreciate you jumping into this alternate reality to see if it's for you. If you feel like reviewing it (and thank you for that!), you can do so on Amazon (link above) and Goodreads. If you want to talk to me about it, just hit reply.
So that's my news. Now here's an unrelated question: What's pure comfort reading for you, a go-to book when things are awful? Asking for a friend, and by friend, I mean me and everyone living through 2020. On my short list: Pride & Prejudice (sans zombies).
And here's that book giveaway I mentioned. I've only had a chance to read one of these stories so far, but it's a cool, atmospheric tale. If you like gaslamp fantasy, check out "Something Happened on the Way to the World's Fair."
