Given that I'm a fantasy author, you will be forgiven for imagining that this email's subject line, "Unrequited Love and Dragons" is about a book. However, the title refers to a more personal story, one that I hope amuses you as much as it does me.
My eldest daughter is in the 5th grade, and to date, is still largely uninterested in romance. Other kids in her class are definitely becoming interested in matters of the heart, though. My child occasionally mentions that X kid has crush on Y kid, even if she doesn't see the appeal herself.
What does get my daughter excited is dragons. She didn't really stand a chance in this regard, given that my husband and I are huge nerds and have tons of fantasy-related stuff in the house. Just the sight of a dragon in a cartoon or on a book cover, and her eyes light up and she declares it's the cutest thing in the world (no matter how many scales or teeth said dragon has).
There is one particular boy in her class that not only shares my daughter's love of dragons, but I have become increasingly suspicious that he "likes" her as well. They read the same dragon books and watch the same dragon shows, so she appreciates having a buddy to discuss dragon topics with. She has also mentioned that he teases her to the point of annoyance, and she doesn't understand why because, again, she hasn't reached that stage of puberty yet.
Then yesterday, she brought home this excellent drawing of a dragon:
Love the multi-elemental breath on this guy.
She told me that dragon boy had given it to her. Wondering if she finally recognized his affection for her, I asked my daughter why he had drawn it for her. She insisted that he didn't draw it for her specifically. She claimed it was just "laying on his desk" and he didn't "want it any more," so he offered it to her.
Look closely, and you can even see that dragon boy wrote "Have it. I don't want it" in the upper left-hand corner. Because of course that's a thing you do when you're going to throw something away otherwise.
