Gym advice to my 16-year-old self

I joined a new gym recently:

It's full of young people, and it reminds me of when I started out.

They’re making all the same mistakes I did back then—isolation exercises with tiny weights, getting unsolicited advice from dubious characters, spending more time on their phones than lifting, and more.

Back in my day, we didn’t have phones. But we still got advice for friends—the least ignorant in the group. Better than nothing, but not great.

That kind of advice can often seriously slow your progress.

If I could talk to my 16-year-old self, I’d say instead: pick a few big lifts, train them often, focus on getting stronger, eat more calories (especially protein), and be consistent. Don’t obsess over the details.

Most of the stuff I tried only sped up my gains by maybe 5%. Fun if you’re passionate, but not necessary to get in shape.

Not that passionate? Dr. Muscle automates all the essentials for you, so you can focus on lifting heavy, and getting bigger. Keeps it simple.
