[4 min read] Virality vs truth, Attia's compilations & old vs new water filter

đź‘‹ Hey. Welcome to issue #146 of The Everyday Athlete Newsletter.

Here are my 3 favourite ideas, learns and resources to help you improve your performance this week (4 min read):

🔍 When AI lies: the fake study that went viral

AI is now helping pages put content on tap.

And AI sometimes tells porkies. And humans sometimes don’t fact-check it.

For example, a couple big instagram pages published these posts:

About a “2023 study in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology” that claimed sleeping with your feet out helps you fall asleep faster.

As trivial as it is, I was curious if it was linked to glabrous skin surfaces from newsletter #14.

So I went to dig up the paper.

Went through every study published in that journal in that year. Couldn’t find it.

Nor any other year. Nor journal.

So as far as I can tell, the study doesn’t exist.

What I did find was a 1999 study in Nature that found the opposite — that warming the feet helps you fall asleep faster (as they dump heat and lower core body temp).

Anyway, less about whether it’s true or not true.

More that:

Virality doesn’t always equal truth.

Keep a sceptical eye.

🛠️ Attia just dropped a goldmine

When it comes to health, performance and longevity, Dr Peter Attia knows his stuff.

He’s recently pulled (or probably more accurately, AI did)hundreds of hours of insights from his podcast into topic-specific compilations.

They’re collections of podcast clips, articles, and full podcast eps on specific subjects.

The first one on metabolic health was just released.

A science-based breakdown of the biggest weapons in the space chatting shop—organised for clarity.

Good one to bookmark. He says more topics coming soon.

đź’¦ Why you might consider filtering your water...

That is our old ceramic water pre-filter vs our new one.

The old one is brown because it traps dirt, rust and crap from our tap water.

If you’re interested, we are running the Zazen.

(a gift, thank you EB!)

That's it!

Have a great weekend 🤙

Matt
