👋 Hey. Welcome to issue #147 of The Everyday Athlete Newsletter.
Here are my 3 favourite ideas, learns and resources to help you improve your performance this week (4 min read):
🤧 Rhonda Patrick, bush medicine & deleting sickness this winter
An uncommon cold hit my wife and I this week.
A friend dropped over a batch of this “turmeric wellness shot”.
And it got me looking into natural immune boosters.
I dug up the Warndu Mai cookbook and found the “health drink”.
The main ingredients are:
- 🫐 kakadu plums (100x vitamin c of an orange)
- 🍋 lemon/lime
- 🫚 the anti-inflam + anti-ox duo of tumeric and ginger
You just jam it all in a mug and refill with hot water throughout the day. And it lasts — only have to restock the goodies every few days.
Side note: the authors reckons:
“We have not had a cold or flu in years because we take the (Kakadu) plum in powder form in a shot of water when travelling or feeling rundown… the one bush medicine I urge you all to get onto”.
For the parents of young kids thinking, “well the authors clearly don’t have young kids”...
Watch this clip.
It’s health and fitness wizard Rhonda Patrick sharing some “anec-data” (i.e. not much science to back it up) on supplementing glutamine to avoid the cold. She gives it to her son too.
“And I don’t ever get sick anymore”… “he doesn’t get sick anymore”.
She runs 5g a day as baseline. Jacked up to 20g after “exposure” i.e. feeling rundown, or someone in household sneezing or getting sick.
There is actually some early science to support the benefits of glutamine on immunity. But we don’t know how or why yet.
Note: not for those with cancer (as cancer cells feed on glutamine).
May be worth a try if you're on the cold and flu ferris wheel.
🧠 The mindset reframe I've stolen from alcoholics anonymous
If reclaiming your health and fitness feels like there's a mountain to climb, steal this powerful reframe from AA's 12-step program...
You can stay in bed tomorrow.
You can binge on those red rock delis tomorrow.
You can skip your walk and stay inside by the heater tomorrow.
But not today.
Set a 6-week or 6-month goal, sure. That gives us direction.
But then just commit to today.
One at a time.
That's it.
The last 6 weeks, I've still been coaching in person. But I'm about to shift gears. So my energy's been super unaligned.
Getting out of bed at 5am to go run sessions all morning has been draining.
But this reframe's been getting me through it.
Really helpful.
⛽️ The Nutri-Grain lads were right
Been reading a book called Good Energy.
(good read on root cause health, recommend)
It got me thinking...
We all want more (or better) energy.
And energy flows.
So maybe we need to ask:
If we're fueling with good or bad energy?
- 🌞 Light: phone or sun?
- 🥑 Food: processed or real?
- 💬 Social: 2D or 3D?
- 💨 Oxygen: mouth or nose?
- 🛏 Rest: stimulated or still?
The Nutri-Grain lads had it right:
You only get out what you put in.
So we filling up with cheap petrol? Or that premium 98 stuff?
Cause if we wanna perform like an F1, we gotta fuel accordingly.
That's it!
Have a great weekend 🤙
Matt
