[2.5 min read] South Korean archery clues, Huberman protocols & the sugar hit

👋 Hey. Welcome to issue #68 of The Everyday Athlete Newsletter.

Here are my 3 favourite ideas, learns and resources to help you improve your performance this week (2.5 min read):

🏹 South Korean archery clues

South Korea has won 23 of the 34 Olympic gold medals in archery since 1984.

And success leaves clues...

“When Korean kids are younger, they train with a rubber band. They don’t go to a bow right away. So they focus on form. Again and again.

But in America they focus on where it lands. So they don’t really focus on form that much.”

That’s a quote from a US archer training in Korea – her observation on the differences between the two nations.

A clue that, focusing on the process is more helpful than focusing on the outcome. Which research has shown time and time again, to drive better results.

Could be:

Get lost in the process, and the outcome might just take care of itself.

🛠️ Huberman Protocols

🍯 The arvo sugar hit

I used to think squirting honey down my throat would give me the energy to push through the afternoon…

But the sugar-hit pick-me-up is not a real thing.

See, when we eat something sweet, a chemical called dopamine gets released immediately. Dopamine is linked to pleasure and reward. It makes us feel happy.

This happy feeling might make us feel more energised. But it’s not real energy. It’s pleasure (from dopamine).

Real energy comes from tiny factories in our cells called mitochondria.

So, if you wanna eat something sweet, do it for the pleasure. Not because it will give you lasting energy.

For an instant energy hit, instead try:

  1. 🏃‍♂️ An exercise snack
  2. 💨 A couple mins of superventilation breathing
  3. 🧊 A cold shower

Or combine them for energiser bunny stuff.

That's it!

Have a great weekend 🤙
